  • %#$@*! Oh No!

So i am driving my fresh 5spd swapped over from auto and loving it... on the highway at 65mph.. i slow down on the off ramp, push the clutch in to downshift and go to put it into 4th...... nothing! and as soon as I took it out of 5th the whole shifter was super super loose. I am thinking worst case scenario and here i am in for another transmission swap.
I coast to a stop, turn off the car, pop the hood, see if my shift linkage bolt has come out (thats what my shifter feels like). It is very sloppy, but i start the car again and I find 3rd, so i start it and creep to my destination, only in 3rd.. i try to find 4th or 5th when moving, but can't find them....
I am about to blow a gasket as i just got this thing in.. for sure cannot find 1st or 2nd. have i shelled my 5spd?
someone please tell me i don't have to replace this @#$&* thing!

You installed the different shift stalk, correct? Has its ball popped out of the socket at its base?

Stop sweating for now. You need to have some sit in the car and run thru the gears as you watch the linkage at the tranny. Don't forget about the bolts under the shifter above the cat.

My bolt that is through the bottom of the shifter, that connects to the linkage was half way out! WHEEW! I didn't have a lock washer on and NOW i do..
Ever since i got this tranny from a JY, that little hoovering thought in my mind of if this tranny is good or not..

If it is any consolation, I went for at least 3 months believing the transaxle I installed with a new crate engine had a bad synchro in second gear (that is the first one to go as a general rule). After driving long enough, it appears it was sticky from sitting without lube for as long as it had. I was sure I would be swapping it back out.......
              WHEW!
Glad it did not completely fall out on the road on you!

yeah, we all have felt like retards sometimes in our life!

if that bolt would have fallen out, i'd been sunk.

i can understand that would have been very very frustrating, luckily it was something small and simple to fix

                  1988 323 GT - B6T Powered

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?
