What I did (YMMV) is remove the entire steering knuckle assembly and tie the brake caliper up into the coil spring. May have to use a chisel/big flat screwdriver to convince the pinch bolt thingy to let go of the lower control arm's ball joint stud. The lower control arm can hang free. Drain the transmission before removing the shaft, else you'll likely have a lovely pool of ATF on the floor when you pop the shaft out!

You can use something like a slide hammer on the end of the shaft to pop it out of the tranny. Or if you're gutsy & careful, use a big pry bar where it goes into the tranny. Just be very careful not to crack the tranny housing open!

I've always heard it said to use a new circlip whenever installing a new 1/2-shaft, but get it fitting tightly into the shaft groove before trying to pop the 1/2-shaft back into the tranny; else it may not go in at all.

Dean (V8Festiva) and I have done several 1/2-shaft replacements & not really had much problem.

Dragon: PM me. I should be able to get you some info....

no slide hammer (you'll tear the inner boot) just the prybar: place the tip right in front of the trans seal, set the curve against the trans case, and with the heal of your hand, smack the handle to pop the c-clip. once the clip moves, then tug the axel the rest of the way out.

^^^Ahhh... I stand corrected about the slide hammer then.

(The slide hammer setup I'd seen was attached to the outer splined area where it goes into the steering knuckle. Better "safe" than "sorry", though.)

i had alot of trouble removing my half shafts. if one prybar doesn't work find the nearest recruit and get him working on the opposite side, that way you'll get it coming straight out instead of at an angle. i spent a large portion of two days trying other ways. the best way, if you know a mechanic with access to tools, is one of those horseshoe lookin deals. does the same trick as the dual prybar. thinkin of getting myself one made up. just remember to lubricate the tranny seal with tranny fluid when your putting the shaft back in, and if you can haynes says to grease the splines on the half shaft ends. oh yeah, if your not already done yet, a trick fastivica showed me is to just disconnect the strut to steering knuckle bolts/nuts(2) then by turning the steering wheel you can get the shaft out by angling the joint. you'll get it once your there.

I spent forever trying to get my drivers side axle out.....never came out so I put everything back together and drove it, ha. I'm tired of looking at this new axle and seals sitting in the garage. The car is off the road now b/c of bad suspension problems (I need to replace everything). Once I get all the parts together I'm just gonna pay the $50 to have the shop that does the alignment replace it =(

if you are replacing the axle, why does it matter if you tear the inner boot? I use a slide hammer for these when they are being difficult, haven't ever torn anything...

I might be missing something, as Festyboy definitely knows what he is talking about...

just saying, I have used a slide hammer.

I have also had luck just using the whole axle as a slide hammer, whack whack, and it's out.
