  • Auto ignition question

Im putting a five speed in a car with an auto tranny. Im wondering about the ignition switch. Im removing the cable that runs from the switch to the shifter but I wanted to know if I might have problems with the lock out still being on the switch. Do I need to remove it or disable it some how or is it a non issue ? I have a manual switch I could put in but Id like to keep the switch that came in the car so Ill only have one key for the doors and ignition.

I had to put an auto cylinder in my car a couple weeks ago (It was all I had on hand) What I did was tie that lever in the forward position (from drivers seat perspective). From what I could tell, when that lever is closer to you It locks the key in, and when it is further from you the cylinder acts like a normal ign cylinder. I couldn't figure out how to disable it so I secured it in the un-locked position with some welding wire. Haven't had any problems.

Thanks stefan, that is kind of what I was thinking. I havent taken the two screw on the top out yet. I was thinking also that maybe you could just remove it.

I think I tried to take it apart, without success. I think how I ended up doing it was I loosened out one of those machine screws and wrapped the wire around the screw head, around the lever, and back. Then I twisted it really good.

I think the purpose of the lever is so that the car cant be put into gear w/o the key being on and also as stefan mentioned so that you cant remove the key unless the car is in park. The lever moves when the button on the auto shifter is depressed. Ill go mess with it in a little bit and check.

I've removed locks from a few autos and they all had it. Perhaps a previous owner changed your lock-set?

I went out and messed with mine and its the opposite. If the lever is slid forward toward the frt on the car the key wont go into the lock position, it stops at acc. I can still pull the key out at acc though. If I slide the lever back toward me then the ign works like a manual, the steering wheel locks and the key can be removed in the "Lock " position.

Ok, I'm sure mine was probably the same, I'm probably just mixed up, I worked on mine a few weeks ago.
