Several of you guys are running synthetic oils and I've heard mixed reviews. The one most prevalent is the one that says the engines of these older cars were not intended to run with synthetic oils and can cause major problems. Has anyone else heard that and is that truely a myth?

Years ago engine manufacturers recommended non-detergent oils for engine break-in, when "square-faced" cast iron rings needed to "seat" into the engines. This is no longer the case and now engine manufacturer's no longer recommend the use of non-detergent oils. Maybe thats where it came from.
I think just about ANY oil you buy today is gonna have high levels of detergents and dispersants. Let me know if you find any that don't, just wondering.

What major problems did "they" say would happen exactly?
Fact:Synthetic oils DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, cause oil leaks. Deteriorated and hardened seals and gasket material cause engine oil leaks.

Myth:Using synthetic motor oil will void a manufacturer's warranty.
However, one exception would be the Rotary (Wankel) engine in certain Mazda vehicles....
        Dear John,

Thank you for contacting Mazda North American Operations. I appreciate
the opportunity to respond to you.

In regard to your inquiry, Mazda recommends using 5W-20 engine oil for
the Mazda RX-8. Please understand, Mazda hasn't done any long-term
testing using synthetic oil with the RENESIS rotary engine. As such,
we don't recommend the use of synthetic oil.

        Regards,

You hit the nail on the head...major leaks, wear & tear on gaskets and any non metal parts. To me it all sounded like a bunch of bull because every car made has "non-metal" parts but most myths start with a little truth somewhere. This one though just seemed to make no sense but thought I'd ask before doing something I'd regret.

I just fill the gas tank with 2 Stroke and don't worry about putting in oil. (Kill two birds with one stone, know what I'm sayin')

That's probably a little easier than what I was thinking about.....smokey old GE U-Boats or Alco's! (I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about Jim, but I guess most people don't).
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.
