  • Removing hatch glass and....

Bought a new rust-free hatch,w/wiper.I want to take the glass out to paint it right(or close to right) also,I never had a rear wiper,so,I would like to hook up the wiring.Any help would be appreciated.

I took the rear glass out once before. You gotta start pulling away at the weatherstripping at a spot and then peel it out...or something like that, someone else can explain it better maybe. To install it is like putting in rear truck glass>>use a rope that fits around the gasket/weatherstripping, place glass in and pull rope(from inside car) which pulls gasket/weatherstripping into place, again maybe someone else can explain that better.
Wiring should be there taped/hanging somewhere I guess...basically plug-n-play? let me know

I think packrat had to do one onetime.? It is difficult to take out. Even more so to put it back in. Not to mention the risk of breakage. You could have a glass shop do it. Some come to your location. More $$$ though, if you're sure you want to go that route for painting then have a pro do it. Is there rust under the glass seal? If not, no need to paint under there. If there is rust, get a stiff plastic putty knife so it wont scratch and lift the edge of the rubber seal up and see if you can treat the rust with the glass in. There are some good products to treat rust and can be painted over. To me not worth the effort to take it out, You may end up distubing the paint putting the galss back in, leading to bare metal/future rust. I had a glass shop swap a wind shield in a Festy for me. They came to my garage, took out the broken one, took the good one out of a parts car and install in my car for $75. I thought that was a HECK of a deal! Just my $.02

O ya, when you reinstall it, use some soapy water for lube, or you risk tearing the gasket(happened to me)....If you do it yourself

Save yourself a few headaches, take it to a glass shop!
You might be able to do it if you have new rubber!

Appreciate it , guys.It isn't going to be my "PERFECT" paint job, just temporary until I completely redo it,if I do.Maybe I will just tape it off.It is 100% rust-free.I checked all over.I went to WV to pick up a Festy and I bought it w/wiper for $35.00 so I didn't care what the color was.

Then I would just tape it up with some newspaper.

                I need one too.

I have a 100% rust free hatch from Georgia. It doesn't have a rear wiper. I need a 100% rust free one with a rear wiper. I won't mount my spoiler until I have one. Where did you get yours from?

Look up one of Frestivas write ups on how to install rear wiper in hatch without one!

Another thing to do is put "wire" or clothes hanger pieces under the rubber, that will raise it up and allow paint to get under there for a good looking finish. Get it?

I had a professional that works at a glass shop do it for me (at his house ) ..LOL

It took both of his hands and both of mine to get the rubber out , and he had the correct tools .I did not think it was coming out .

The rubber was very hard and did not want to come out , I really thought the glass was going to break .

Went back in pretty easy though.

All I did was upgrade to a heated glass from a plain glass.

All the connectors was up above the headliner , when I upgraded to a hatch that had defog and wiper /washer .
My car had none of that from the factory , but the wiring was there , and I just put the switches in the dash , connectors there too.

                        Hope that helps .

Just fold down your back seat, sit in the back with the hatch closed. IF you can apply constant pressure and don't kick the glass you can force it out with the help of a hook tool or hose removal tool. You use that tool to ease the rubber over the pinchweld. Install is easy as pie rope it in brother....bottom first. To avoid tearing the gasket pull the rope at a 90 degree angle from glass/gasket keep your hand close to the glass while pulling the rope and not away from it or towards yourself. One day I'm gonna have to make a DIY thread on all this glass stuff.
