  • Wiper arm removal

I have a wiper arm stuck on the pivot shaft. The book says it's splined. Is this a tapered spline or a straight spline?

I tried prying under the end of the arm while tapping on the shaft. Obviously it didn't work or I wouldn't be here. I squirted some penetrating oil on it and left it.

    Any trick here?

Just let the penetrating fluid(PB Blaster) do it magic!
Don't even bother with WD-40, get the good stuff.
In this weather you might want to apply it a few times or bring the car into the garage or heat it with a blow dryer, but not a torch, to help loosen it.
    Think the spines are tapered.

I put PB on it. It's in a heated garage also. If that spline is tapered, it might take a small puller to get it off? No?

Maybe, but think I'd just let the fluid work!
Unless you have a puller that small, otherwise I'd be afraid of damaging it.

Sometimes it help to pull up on the arm itself and take a little pressure off the shaft , I have found that small amount of pressure can keep pressure on the shaft and not let it come up. Once I lift up on the arm , I wiggle the arm contact piece , I have never had one that would not come off .
          just a suggestion .

You may have already tried that.

Why are you taking the arm off? Did it stop swinging?

I had that problem years ago...underneath it the linkage the pivot arm broke loose from the spindle.

              Two reasons:

The wiper pivot is a little loose to the sheet metal and I want to tighten it up before it gets worse.

It has the wrong arm on it. It doesn't hook on the blade like it's supposed to. Somebody has run a nail through the blade, through the arm and that's what holds the blade on. It works but I don't like the looks of it.

I know, sometimes you're better off letting well enough alone.

they do make small pullers made to remove wiper arms/ battery terminals, but most you can just wiggle off. you dont have to be super carefull just dont pull like an ogre.

                    Small puller will do it.

Just bend that bad boy up and start wiggling it in a up down motion. I'd say try to hit it with something to shock it but many things would probably go worng example broken windshield or broken wiper arm.

exactly what Pack said....lift up the arm and with the other hand grab hold and wiggle up and down while pulling up at the same time. It will start to wiggle a little then more till it pops off.

Well, I've tried all that. I think I'll give the PB another day or two and if doesn't wiggle off, I"ll find a puller. I just don't want to break anything. It looks like it might be a lot of trouble to replace that pivot if I broke it.

                          Thanks.

Raise the wiper arm to vertical. Lay a putty knife or similar under the base to protect the car finish. Wiggle and pry up all around with a big screwdriver.

Some of your auto parts stores carry the wiper arm puller. They may be on a loan basis, but if not, they usually cost around $20-30.
