  • Uh - Oh !!!

Just drove my '88 around the block. The motor was making a metal ringing sound. When I parked it, I noticed it was leaking oil! It's never leaked anything before. What's the bad news?

    Probably a head gasket?

It almost sounds like you were about to throw a rod. Let us know where the oil was coming from and we might be able to help you narrow it down better.

I crawled under it. It was dripping off the oil pan. Seemed like it might be coming from the front of the motor.

With the oil coming from the front (front of engine, or car?), it could be the oil pan gasket or the front oil seal. The noise is what has me worried. If I was closer, I'd be happy to come and take a look. It could also be minor like valve ticking due to low oil.

Last time I took it in for an oil change, they wouldn't do it. He said something about the motor making the ringing sound. That's all he said. It wasn't knocking, or overheating. Still has plenty of power (for a 1.3). Starts right up. I appreciate the offer to look at it. PA. is pretty far away.

Oh yeah, it's coming from the front of the motor.

I'm also getting a lot of blow by oil into the air breather.

The cars are known to blow the front crank seal. Hopefully your ringing is low on oil.

My Silver Bullet started blowing oil into the breather at about 250,000 miles. It still kept going for another 150,000. There was never any real noise, though. It is entirely possible that you are indeed dealing with low oil level causing valve noise. How many miles are on it?

I'd fix that pan gasket and front seal. Then just keep an eye on the dip and keep oil in the motor like eric said.
