Jim, I went out and got a test light, and used it per your instructions.

When I did this the light just stayed on, no flashing. The battery is getting low on power, could that mess with the results?

no, a low battery won't change the results. You have a bad module.

However, the rest of the test went as directed: I unplugged the blue wire from the negative terminal, and touched it with the probe, and it did light (indicating a shorted module) (was not cranking the engine during this part).

So, it seems I have a bad module.

Is there any way to get the armature off the shaft without using a puller?

I agree with Pu241's recommendation. Replace the entire dizzy with a known good unit. Keep in mind, you had lots of oil inside your dizzy, which tells me the seals, and possibly the shaft bushings, are also worn out. I would, however, keep the old one for parts or a core.

One of the things that concerns me about getting a used one is installing it correctly so the timing is right,,I don't have a timing light etc to do that. Also, I don't know how long it will take to find a good used one (I have no way to get to the jy), and I need my car running asap.

you don't need a timing light to replace it. First, the dizzy shaft fits into the end of the cam only one way, so you can't mess that up. Now, before you remove the old dizzy, trace around it's mounting flange with a Sharpie. Remove the two bolts, pop off the old dizzy, pop in the replacement, bolt up and go!!
