my 88 carbed 4 speed is bogging down. it happened about two months ago then again today.i live way up on in the mountains of n.c. i was driving down in third when i felt it had a little power so i shifted to second then it bogged down and stopped.second time this happened. i tried starting it with my foot all the way down on the gas pedal. it kept cranking but no start. i waited about four minutes then i did the same thing and kept pumping it this time and i caught it.so far its fine. fuel filter has 10000 miles on it this is the same fuel filter that was on it when it happened two months ago of course with lesser miles. new plugs, oil pump, timing belt tensioner, water pump, alt belt, air filter, breather, pcv, all recent. what do you think ? anybody have this problem ? good thing the weather was nice.

if that doesn't fix it try just cleaning out the carb. carbon gets in there when you do a lot of short trips and could gum things up pretty well. get some spray and clean it out anyways and put some gumout carb cleaner or seafoam in the gas tank"If you're not first you're last!" -Ricky Bobby

carb.
well i just changed my rotor, cap, wires, started right up no problem yet.Like i said the cap had some buildup on the posts.the rotor looked like it could use a new one. the wires who knows.? what i just changed would it have an affect on my idle ? my festy was idling fast even when the choke opened up or warmed up. seems like it settled a bit after warm up and after i changed the items. what do you think had an affect ?

has the idle ever been played with before? someone may have raised it due to apoor idle\stalling condition. since now you have fixed the problem the idle may be to high..... just a guess btw88 mustang 427 stroker garrett t-76 turbo best run 8.86@ 151.56

When was the ignition control module in the distributor last changed? Intermittent stalling is one symptom of a dying ICM. They come with a 5 year 50,000 km warranty. I wouldn't advise replacing it without getting it tested first as they cost $150 or so, but some parts stores will test them for free. If you do replace it bed it in some dielectric heat transfer grease, the stuff they put under the CPU in computers. It's real cheap from electronics suppliers, about $1 each which is enough to do 2 computers, more than enough for one ICM.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.
