    mpg

did the wire have anything to do with the fast idle ? i know thats a silly question because it does seem to idle much lower than previous stated.if the timing is off would it show up in idling ? would it make my mpg worse? or its just a thing that you should do when messing around with the choke ? thanks joey g

that red wire is the heater power lead for the choke stove. Without it connected, the choke will not fully disengage. A partially applied choke will cause a high idle, poor fuel economy, and rough idle due to fuel loading of the plugs.

Ignition timing is a separate issue from the choke. However, as FestYboy has stated, ignition timing can have a significant impact on power, economy and idle speed and quality.

A stuck automatic choke or a failing ignition control module can cause high idle. Tapping the gas pedal can sometimes release a stuck choke. Spraying the choke and trottle linkages, also inside the carburttor, with carburettor cleaner might help. I do that at least once a year. I'd save taking the ICM out for testing at an auto parts store until last as they cost $150 or so.
