  • axles, half shafts?

Well I'm in the process of getting my Fester up and running.. today I pulled the axles (by hand) and I think they need replacing

All the CV boost are dead, something that looks like it once could have been balancer at one point is just floating up and down the axle

so should I just put on new boot, or replace the whole thing?

where is the best place to buy parts (I'm in CA)

and also on another not I need a full gasket kit and timing belt/ water pump kit. where should I pick these up at as well?

    Thanks guys

Uh, a little patience go a long way!
This has been discussed numerous times.
      Short answer swap axles.
They generally come with a lifetime warranty and you've already did the hard work of removing the axles.
Just take them in as a core and make sure the new ones are exactly the same length as the old ones.
Pop them in and enjoy 100K+ miles driving!

Autozone, O'Rily's, Advanced Auto, almost any Mcparts can get them.
Out your way, CA, I've seen places that just do axles so they might be a good place too.
Just make sure they're going to be there when you need to use the warranty.
          Used mine 2x so far!
BTW, your post reaching the bottom of the page is only what you see.
Most of us use the "New Posts" up in the blue bar and your post wasn't anywhere near the bottom. Just give us some time, 3 hrs is much to work with given the number of time zones our membership crosses.

                NAPA is a good source.

Yeah...anyone....what's with that rubber donut-ty thing on the passenger side axle? I've never figured that one out.

Its a torsional dampener. Reduces torsional vibration that can cause the shaft to oscillate.

I've got some answers, for the original post.

RockAuto.com is a great resource, for purchasing the parts that you are looking for. If nothing else, to get part numbers, for comparison shopping (or walking into a McParts store with some real knowledge).

Buying a fresh pair of axles is the easiest route. If the car has low miles, you can "re-boot" the CV joints, but it is a lot of work, and you have to work from the "inside-out" to do it... I re-booted my axles, at approx 80K, and they are still doing quite nicely, after 229K.

I would also suggest that you replace the (out-facing) transaxle seals, while you have the axles out.

Important note: Contrary to what Napa Auto Parts says, there are two different transaxle seals (one for the right side, and one for the left). Trust me, for I learned that the hard way.

                      Good Wrenching!

                      Cheers,

                      Scott

Thanks guys, I think Ill just swap them out for some new pieces cause the car has 240K on it and probably 15 or 20 track days under its belt, that along with tons of canyon racing I think Ill just go the safe route

As to the guy who asked if I knew how to search, yes I do. I just put in "axle where to buy" and a few other things that didn't get any hits

                          thanks for the help

i know how it is silver. the people who have been here for 2+ years to be able to see all the posts live when they happened think they have something on newcomers...try searching "TPS settings" next. You won't get what you want.
Anyway axles are nothing special. I would do the autozone club thing myself. 5 purchases of 20 bucks and you get 20 dollars off the next purchase. (HINT buy each axle seperate)
