Oil under timing cover

  • Oil under timing cover

    Well, I noticed that my car was losing oil so I put it on the lift and there was a drop of oil collecting under where the crank pulley is at... but I wasn't sure if that was because of an oil pan gasket or crank seal. So I went to take of the timing cover (which I don't really know how to take it off all the way, need some help there too) and i got three bolts out and noticed that for one the timing belt was cracked all to hell and two there was oil in the timing cover also.
    So is there supposed to be oil in the timing cover and if not what under there would be leaking oil to cause this, and how do i take that dang cover off all the way?

    the cover is a 2 piece unit that's held in w/ 10mm bolts. to compleatly remove it, you should remove the w/p pulley and the crank pulley. you'll need a philips head driver for the crank pulley and a 10mm socket. once the pulleys are off, the cover is easy. to get to the crank seal (most likely canidate for leak) you need an air gun to take the crank bolt out. once the bolt and belt are off, the lower sprocket will slide off and you can access the seal.

      well that does helps me out alot, thanks but it still doesn't answer why i have oil under my timing cover

        first you have to remove the top timing cover, then the bottom

        then check to see if the camshaft seal is leaking, then the crankshaft seal

          camshaft seal, wow, i can't believe i didnt even think of that, but now i know how to get the timing cover off so thanks for all the help
