  • Ball Joints - A lesson learned

I had a leaking transmission oil seal (where the axle goes into tranny) on my Escort so I replaced that yesterday. When trying to remove the ball joint, I couldn't get that sucker to come out. I had my 24" pry bar on it, and it would go about half way, then stop. I tried for an hour and never got it. So I took a break from it since I was getting frustrated. When I came back to it, I simply pressed down on the wishbone with my hands and it came right out! Didn't even take much force. I must have been binding it with the bar. Festivas are a bit different design, so you have to pry them out, but something to keep in mind. Sometimes trying to force things isn't always the best way to do it.

on the festiva, you do not pry them out, you take a cold chisel and a hammer and wedge in the space (slot) just behind the pinch bolt toward the axle to spread the knuckle to relieve the tension on the ball joint and it should fall out.

Pretty hard for it to fall out when the stabilizer bar is under tension.

I suppose if you took off the stabilizer bar first, then it might just fall out. Is this how you do it?

I leave the stabilizer bar mounted and just pry it out. Usually pretty easy.
