Rear bearings "welded" onto spindle?

Well I just got to my rear wheel bearings on Twinstiva. The right side has been making some noise in the past week or so. It's a nice day, so I decided to do it.

I had to reinstall the wheel to get the brake drum off. Now the inner bearings are left, but they seem to be caught by a little lip or something. I can't get them off the spindle.

Is this what's called "welded" onto the spindle?

How do I get this off? It seems I may have to take the spindle off by the four nuts on the other side of the brake backing. (I know better than to try to loosen the visible "nuts" inside the brake area! They're the ends of the studs.)

I'm breaking for lunch and to watch the noon news.

Fortunately, I still have Luxstiva to run around in. The only problem may be the weather turning nasty overnight.

Any ideas? I have a bearing puller somewhere which I could try. Don't need those old bearings!

i changed my passenger rear spindle once...but i dont remember having any troubles getting it off. once you take the bolt off, i'm pretty sure the assembly should come off as a whole

Thanks Joe. I just saw the latest weather and tomorrow will be clear and warmer, so I feel better.

I already sprayed PB Blaster on the back of the brake plate spindle nuts.

First I'm gonna try the gear/bearing puller if I can find it.

Joe, why were you changing your spindle, if I may ask?

well, funny story there...
it's been a while since, but i was taking off the passenger side nut for some reason and the haynes manual was nice enough to not mention the left-hand thread and so I stripped that little baby down to nothing...
i dont recall, but do you remove the nut to take off the drum? that may have been what i was doing. it's been too long since i've worked on my festy...

I did it!

My 8" puller didn't fit, so I went to Harbor Freight and bought their 3 jaw set of three smaller pullers (3,4 & 6") for about $19.

Got home and put one together.

The small one wouldn't reach far enough.

The middle one was too big--the hooks were just not fitting on with the brake shoes and springs interfering. Maybe I'd have to try disassembling the brakes...yuck...

Wait!

I got an idea: I put the small end hooks onto the middle size body and walla!

It had enough reach, and the small hooks fit and grabbed perfectly, and I got the bearings and seal off toot sweet.

Hi Joe!

Yes, you have to remove the nut to take the drum off. I remembered the reverse thread--mine has no cotter pin hole--because a long time ago when the Mutt had bad rear bearings (I was in W. Va.), I got to watch the shop do the work. They explained that someone had stripped the right rear spindle threads, but they managed to clean them up and they drilled a cotter hole so they could use a standard castle nut they found (probably off an Aspire).

I need to replace my Bearings inner and outer. Do i need a puller to get the inner bearings out? I just wana know what to get before i start taking it apart.

you shouldnt need a puller to get em off unless they have gotten so hot that the literally melted to the spindle

Before for you re-install...slide the new inner race on and make sure no burrs or scars exist on the spindle...if you have any burrs just stone them away. Lots of Brakleen.

I just took my passenger side drum off, and was using the Haynes manual for reference. It said that some models may be left-hand thread. haha

But it's easy to tell if it's torqued to spec because you should feel distinctly that it's tightening.

I had this happen to me in redding CA coming home from pheonix AZ and i did it all in a autozone parking lot after i hit up the local junk yard. I took the four bolts of and had to tap it with the lug wrench(all I had that would work for a hammer) and i came off with out a problem
