  • carb rebuild, now missfire at mid-high RPM's

i just recently rebuilt my carb, it ran OK back to my house the night that i did it, missfired a few times but not bad ( though i was babying it), now i can barely drive it, anytime i try and give it any kind of gas in the mid-upper rpm range it missfires horribly, now while im not a big carb buy im not carburetor stupid, i triple checked everything when i pulled it apart and everything was installed correctly, jets installed properly, float calibrated properly (it was WAY off when i pulled it apart, reset it back to the specs listed on the carb rebuild sheet that came with the kit) all vacuum lines reatached, everything, it idled fine yesterday but now even at idle it is starting to miss some, i dont have any blowby so i know the plugs arent fowled out, but ill be checking them anyway and getting a new fuel filter in the morning, former owner said it was recently changed but it looks horrible on the outside, i also ran some seafoam through it last week so im tihnking i might have knocked some gunk loose and its cloggged up somehow, i also had to replace the fuel pump this weekend becuase the old one was leaking fuel, and it had started doing this BEFORE i replaced the pump so i know thats not it. so any help would be appreciated.

and to anyone who happened to read this entirely oversized run-on sentence with bad spelling i applaud your efforts

An easy thing to check is the level of the fuel in the float bowl. There is a glass window on the side of the bowl. At first I thought it might be the accelleration pump which injects extra fuel when you step on the gas but now that doesn't sound like the problem. I assume you checked that the new gasket matched the old one and didn't block any holes. I've heard that can be a problem with aftermarket gaskets sometimes. Another easy thing to check is that none of the vacuum hoses is loose or cracked.

actually just got it to start again after it sat for awhile out on front of my house, idles rough, and still misses badly, pulled the plugs and they're soaked in gas, and my car wont warm up

checked the level of the fuel in the bowl right after install and it was fine

all vacuum hoses are connected, minus one on the drivers side rear of the carb, goes to somtheing that has another hose comming off of it, its right above the throttle cable linkage, but it the nipple was broken off before i rebuilt the carb and i didnt have this problem, but who knows. wish i had a picture to show you, hard to explain

, almost positive that the gaskets where the same but i still have the old ones laying around so before i tear it off tomorrow ill grab them

the other thing i was thinking, even though i swear i checked it several times is that i flipped the jets around

also i noticed when i purchased the car is that the choke is hot-wired to the coil, i know this is wrong and after looking at several other engine bays i still can't find the wire in mine that its SUPPOSE to be connected to, seems to work okay but it opens early

the main reason i tore this thing apart for a rebuild was that in order to get it going in 1st gear you had to give it a LOT of throttle, im certain it had been rebuilt before becuase the float was WAY out of adjustment. maybe i should have just left it alone..lol

okay here we go again, found a few things and looking for some more input:

          1) after pulling it back apart and looking at the destructions the jets were not swapped they were installed in the proper place.

          2) i found that one of the wires for the emission control solenoid had been sliced at some point, im assuiming it was the signal wire considering that there are only 2 wires on it and the one that wasent sliced was black, i splice the wire back together

          3) there was a slice in the vacuum hose for what appears to be a MAP (i think) which is a rectangular box mounted to the firewall right behind the carb, fixed that. if this was a fuel injected vehicle with computer controlled injectors i would assume that that might have been the entire problem but its not, hence why i havent thrown it all back together yet

          4) when i tore it apart it was the rear barrel ( the one with the choke on it) that was soaked in fuel, hence im asuming thats where the problem came from, accelerator pump is also installed properly, i checked that as well.

hopefully all these little things will solve the problem, i just posted this up to see if ANYONE else had ANY other suggestions before i throw this stupid thing back together and see if i can actually drive my car

lol i appear to be the only person posting in my own thread, lol anyway i thought i would just post up that i finally got it running poperly, i ended up simply putting another carb on it from my friends dads festiva that had a blown engine.

after tearing it apart twice cleaning it again and meticulously making sure that everything was put together properly per the instructions, my roomate (who all of his cars are carbureted) and i are fairly certain that the directions supplied for the walker carburetor kit are wrong, we are pretty sure that they have you flip flopping the jets.

after fixing a fouled out plug and putting the carb back on the for the second time it would still idle fine but again it would still miss at mid/high rpms. and after stopping the car the secondary was completely flooded.

granted i should have paid closer attention when removing them to see which one goes where and not rely on just the directions but stil its upsetting that this appears to be the problem. sont know if anyone else has had this problem, just thought i would let you know
