  • instru. cluster face swap/ trip odometer fix

    Howzit going,

I did search and couldn't find anything directly specific for the following and would appreciate any help. I have a white face speedo/tach and recently acquired an orange face speedo/ tach. Does any one know if the printed faces can be swaped easily without damaging them.

Reason, my white face has 300,000+ miles on it and the trip odometer doesn't work. The orange one only has 69,000 miles on it and the trip odometer works. The main reason for the change is that the lower miles orange cluster more closely represents the mileage of my original non-tach cluster. Secondly, I really prefer look of the white tach.

I know you're not suppose to tamper with trying to spin back the odometer(against the law and also heard the alignment of the numbers get messed up) and not sure if the trip-ometer is fixable.

Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated

You can just swap the speedo assy from the orange cluster into the white cluster. You can also roll back the mileage, but you will need to pull the speedo assy out to do that, so you may as well just install the 69K assy at that point and your done.

      Thank you Brian for responding!

I think I will try swapping out the speedo assembly as you suggested, it sounds like the best bet. I did compare both the orange and white face instrument clusters. It appears there's a difference in the location of the trip reset pins. Visually it doesn't look like they can be swapped??? I would have liked to have a functioning trip-ometer, it would come in handy. I guess could live with out it if it can't be swapped out/fixed.

What is the best way or any instructions on how to swap out the speedo unit. I assume, the speedo indicator needle would just pull off. The speedo unit looks to be held on with (02) screws on the back side. Any special or easy way of separating the housings to get to the unit?

      Thanks once again- greatly appreciated!

        Hey renny,
Take pictures of both speedos. Take pics of each step and then post a how-to for the next person who tries.
