OK when I purchsed this car a '91 GL Auto the engine was bad. No biggie (yea right) I had another engine / auto trans ready to go in from the '89 festi my father wrecked. I had to swap in the '91 injectors/harness and engine harness. I also used the '91 alternator.
Now here's the problem I noticed that the Main fusable link had been replaced with two pieces of 12 ga wire that had a wire nut holding them togather. Of course I removed this and installed the correct fusable link. When I fired the engine everything was going fine until the Main F/L started to smoke. I shut the engine off and started looking for any visable problems (none found). I removed the instrument cluster started the engine again and no smoke. I reconnected the white cluster connector first and smoke returned. Removed the wire to the temp sensor and reconnected bingo no smoke. Disconnected temp sender reconnected wire to cluster again no smoke reconnected sender, no smoke.
At this point I think I have it licked I connect the the black cluster and you guessed it Smoke. Disconnected black connector still smoking, disconnected white connector still smoking. Shut car off pull remaining hair from head and come to you the Festiva collective for help.
Thanks, Will
