  • Loud squeeling noise from cam gear?

Today I installed a new water pump in one of my festys thinking that was making the noise. After starting it back up, the noise was still there and now appears to be coming from the cam gear (the top gear of the timing belt) The noise "squeals" at the speed of the top end...does anyone have any idea where to start looking for the cause? Bearing? Tensioner? Stumped at the moment and consulting the manual.

    Thanks,

It sounds most likely like it would be the timing belt tensioner. The other possibility off the top of my head would be one of the cam bearings is worn out.

It's strange that when I press down on the belt with a glove or rag (carefully of course) the sound goes away, or gets quieter, like tension or slippage is an issue. This my first foray into the side of a B3, consulting manual as well.--Brenton

TRo me, that lends more credence to the tensioner being the problem.

Fix it before your cam bearings eat it.

Exactly...but I don't think there is a 'bearing'....just a bore in the head to capture the cam.

The tensioners can be purchase separately or with a timing belt.

In any case not worth driving or running the engine until it's fixed.

I'm not driving it right now (thanks) I'm going to do a full timing belt job since I'm there, hopefully stumble across the noise problem that way.

                          Group,

The noise ended up being a worn our timing belt tensioner. It took all day to fix due to the surprising amount of work it takes just to be to that part of the engine (remove motor-mount, lift motor, pullys and covers everywhere!) I guess I found something I like better about the metro. One can do a timing belt/ater pump with two tools and 45 minutes.

At any rate, she's buttoned back up and sounding sweet. Thanks everyone!

I don't think the motor mount has to come out.

The only trick part may be the tensioner spring....sorry to hear it took so long.
