  • Replacing ignition switch.. Lesson Learned

I just replaced the ignition switch on an 89 Festiva.

A warning to all that do this repair.

If you are replacing it with a used switch, you will really have to take heed.

When pulling the switch out there is a two wire switch under the lock cylinder that has to be removed as well. This is the key warning switch. If you snap it out, chances are the solders where the wires connect to the contacts will break off.. This happened on both ignition switches when removed. And I didn't just rip them out either. I went by the Ford manual direction on replacing the switch. Resoldering them back was a pita and took longer than the entire replacement.

I had to remove each contact pin from the plastic housing and resolder.

And just as a measure of self security, I put 1 tiny drop of Gorilla Glue over each solder. Once it expanded it covered the entire solder point.

Anyways, be very delicate when removing the key warning switch.
