transmission problems

not shiffting to drive until i get up to 50 mph but shifts smoothly when it does and down shifts when get down to 30 .tranny doesnt slip or anything tranny fluid is bright red doesent smell burnt or anything what could be my problem

sounds like the 2-3 up shift is too high... also sounds like a govenor issue, or the vac diaphram that controls the up shift

the vacuum diaphram does not control the upshift. The vacuum modulator modifies line pressure to increase clutch/band pressures during high throttle angles.

The governer could be the problem. It's also possible you have sticking shift valves.

sry, i was thinking along the lines of the powerglide in my corvair, the govener is supposed to force an upshift at a preselected speed (i'm having issues with it not upshifting under load, it will shift when i get off the gas, but when i reapply to accelerate, it downshifts. this is bad at 55mph!! i'm fairly confident it's a rotted vac line that's causing all this).
