Remove the Speedometer housing from the transaxle, and fill from there. The housing has the fill mark on it.

Yeah, that's the ONLY way to get the fluid back into the tranny. You have to remove the speedo gear from the transmission. It's on the back side of the motor, near the firewall. Just follow the speedo cable down to it. It may be tough to remove it, but whatever you do, DON"T PRY ON THE BOLT TAB! It will snap off in a heartbeat!
There is a rubber o-ring around the speedo gear and it can be a little tough to get it to "pop" out. I used a flathead screwdriver with a fine point to get it between the tranny housing and speedo gear. Then tilted the screwdriver from side to side instead of using a prying motion.
It finally popped out. Once we filled up the tranny with fluid, the gear "popped" back into place.www.cardomain.com/id/jermnc77

I just replaced the driver's side control arm with the same problem. Read about it here:
http://www.ag384fm.bravehost.com/cars.htm . There is a photo of the fluid level indicator in the Haynes manual. It's just a little projection on the side of the speedo unit.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.
