I took my 88 Festiva to my mechanic to have it looked at because it doesn't run smooth. It hesitates upon acceleration and when under a load. He found that dissconecting the EGR valve eliminated the problem. He researched and found a kit online that pretty much eliminates the EGR valve and comes with a sticker that is to be placed on the vehicle that says "Ford authorized modification, the EGR will no longer function." This sticker is suposed to allow the car to pass California emisions. Aparantly the EGR valve allows to much exhaust gas in and causes the hesitation problem I'm having so Ford made this kit to solve the problem. The part numbers are E8PZ-12370-B and E9PZ-12370-B. But I have had no luck finding such kit. My mechanic printed me out the directions from a website called alldatapro.com on how to install this kit so I know it exists. My local Ford dealer has never heard of such a thing either. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing or expereinced the same problems I'm experiencing that are fixed by dissconeting the EGR? My Fesitiva is an 88' LX, 5 speed with 52,000 original miles. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds strange, but looks like a valid Ford part number. Disconnecting the EGR is easy to do, you could make a block-off plate, plug the tube, etc.. If everything is working right to start with then disconnecting it would cause the engine to run too lean and require re-jetting the carb. Obviously in your case you have other issues. If you have the instructions and ability to fab a simple plug or plate then I don't see why you would even need to buy the "kit", however, passing the emissions test would be impossible unless you are sneaky and disconnect it in a way they can't see.
FB71 is really who you need to talk to. If anyone knows about a factory kit or has a fix, it it would be him.

I could just dissconect the EGR and plug the vacume lines back in when it comes time to pass smog. But from what I understand the EGR also controls the vacume advance and could cause my motor to ping and or run lean possibly causeing severe engine damage. Can I even get a new EGR valve at my local auto parts store? Could my EGR valve be bad? If it was bad wouldn't it throw a check engine light? HELP!!!

Take the egr valve off and clean it.It may be clogged with carbon not allowing the valve to close all the way while the engine is at idle.1960 willys pickup
