clutch noise in 93 ?

i just got another 93 , bringing the total to 3 . anyway , when u realease the clutch it makes a weird noise i cannot describe it. any idea what it could be ? on one of my other 93's it had a similar issue and the transmission took a crap so i had to buy a new 5spd and clutch. thanks

maybe the throw out bearing. thats what happend to mine. was like a grinding noise?

Does it sound like a steel wheel rolling on rough concrete? It's most likely a bad bearing in the transmission. Sometimes a bad throw-out bearing can mimic a trans bearing if the clutch is not adjusted right, but usually a throw-out bearing growls when the clutch is depressed and goes away when the clutch is released. Trans bearing usually acts the opposite. I would not drive it much, as the bearing gets worse the extra play will wear the gears, syncros, etc....If you catch it in time you may get by with a set of bearings and seals. Good Luck

My guess would be the throwout bearing... Happened in my Jeep, happened in a Festiva that I was looking at. It's a clunky metal noise. The Festiva that I was looking at wouldn't even engage it was so bad.

Both of ours have howling throw-outs. Worse when it's cold. It's strange. You would think that they would howl when the pressure is on them. But when you take up the free play the howling stops. Why is that?

That's kinda how a bad tranny bearing will act. If you have the pedal adjusted for the proper amount of free-play, I don't think the throwout bearing should be turning at all. When you push the pedal down, the free play is moving the bearing along the input shaft collar and taking up the "gap" between the pressure plate fingers and the bearing. The resistance you feel at the end of the free play is the bearing making contact. That relieves the pressure off of the clutch and the load off the input shaft of the tranny. (hence the noise stops). It doesn't take much pressure release to do this at idle. At least that's how I always thought it worked. If I'm wrong, and I very well could be, I apologize. Either case, the only way to know for sure is to pull the motor.

If the noise only exist while the clutch is depressed or released it is most likely the throw-out bearing....pressure plate.....or a busted clutch pad.

Typically a bad throw-out bearing or pressure plate will make noise while the pedal is depressed or released. A bad clutch pad....very rear...would make noise while being released only.

If it was the pilot bearing in the crank or MTX input bearing the noise would exist while driving...especially when changing gas pedal position. Also you will feel vibration in the power train.

Also the throw out linkage could be getting loose.

In any case the MTX has to come out.
