  • High idle mystery

    Group,

I has my first timing belt break on my 89 carbed a couple days ago (on a road trip, and right across the street from a NAPA!!) After replacing it, the idle has jumped up to 1600rpm's, with no adjustment from the idle screw left. I'eve checked all the vacuum hoses, the timing is set correctly, it's not a tooth off, etc. Any ideas?

    Hey reto,
For starts, glad to hear from you. I was gettig a little worried why our telephonic chatter stopped.
Second, this is if, and only if you are 100% sure that you are not one tooth off. My guess is that the timing belt was previously put on wrong, one or two teeth off, and the distributor/timing was adjusted to compensate. Now that you have the teeth correct, and timing correct, your idle went up. Hence, just lower the idle and you should be nuts on.
When you checked your timing, did you plug the vacuum line from the distributor?

Disconnect the battery and reset the ECU.

        BTW Brenton,

That last intro was suppose to say "Hey Brenton", but I'm having problems with the B and N keys.

I checked the red wire (good) I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes, still no change. It also "deisels" badly when I turn the key off, sometimes requiring me to put it in gear and dump the clutch to get it to quit. It ran perfect until the timing belt change. When I "retard" the timing on the disty, it the idle does go down some, but also has a slow accel. which tells me it's retarded. One last clue that might shed some light: it seems to have a sensor somewhere that mimics a miss, like it's turning off and on for a second, causing it to seem like a piston miss, but isn't. Any more idea og wise group?

plugs not in correct firing order on distributor cap??

Timing is out, when you did the belt did you align the marks on the cam and the crank shaft pulley?

When I changed the timing belt, I lined the two marks on the cam pulley, and the yellow mark down on the crank pulley to TDC. When driving down the road at normal RPM's, it runs good enough, but it runs like crap at idle, and too high (1600 RPM's) it also has some sort of mimic miss, like a sensor is turning off and on. I've looked over EVERYTHING I can think of, no vacuum lines off, or broken, no wires off, if the disty was 180 out, it simply wouldn't run, correct? Does the disty have several access points onto the cam, or just two? I did a compression test, 180 all the way across. Complete mystery why changing the timing belt would make it go from running great, to running like crap. This is my workhorse festy that's always served me flawlessly.

The yellow mark on the pulley? Or the actual mark/arrow on the crank, itself? I only rely on that yellow pulley mark, when using a timing light. You're using the little "teat" on the timing belt cover, and not the graduated marks, nearer the front of the engine, right? (I did that on my first time, and could not figure out what I was doing wrong...)

My hunch is that you might be a little off, with the new belt. Hope this helps (without offense).

                      Cheers,

                      Scott
