  • Extremely Erratic/High Idle...1990 Festiva

I am having some issues that I can not figure out. The last week or so, my car has been running, well, weird. The idle is all over the place while in park or neutral, either hunting up or down (say 1000-2500rpm, sometimes very quickly, other times slowly) or is staying stuck at a vey high speed (4-5k). I have a parts car that I know all is well on, so I swapped every engine sensor I could find. Still no good. Then the electric fan stops working and the car overheated while I was downtown, has to stop, disconnect the fan and hook it up straight to the battery with some wire I had in the back. To top it all off, ever since this idle problem started when you take your foot off the gas, the car will accelerate itself, stopping it, it feels like I have my foot mashed on both the brakes and the accelerator, and all this extra effort required to stop it and keep it stopped has overheated and burnt out my front brakes. I have to stop driving it due to these problems since it has now become a safety hazard.

I've checked vacuum lines, sensors, etc, etc, and cant find the problem, and I do not have another vehicle, so I need to figure this out asap. I'm trying to make a video of the idle symptoms so i can put it up, since one can only describe so much.

this may sound crazy, but is your accel cable properly adjusted? your butterfly plate should close all the way, when you're foot is off the pedal.. thats the first thing that came to mind. on EFI cars, there is a cold idle which can be around 1-2K rpms.. but that should drop. have you replaced your IAC?

I did not see a IAC, I know when my 5.0L ford did this, it was the IAC that was acting up. And yes, the ECT has been replaced with a known good sensor...

Clean out the IAC would be my guess also. driver side of the intake manifold, down low. Cylinder shape with a believe a blue cap of the bottom with a two pin electrical connection.
