it is very difficult given our cars ages and the condition of the green plastic clip that is next to impossible to release without removing the dash

why would you need to remove it?

there is a very good chance the clip will break

Mine doesn't work and I wanted to replace it. I just use it to charge my cell phone.

Hi Wayne I have hard wired in my car cell phone charger so that it is permanently on and I have soldered the terminals to connect, the charger has a low drain and it sits in the glove box and is out of sight, also I have installed the biggest battery that I can fit into the battery bay.

I tapped into one of the fuses that are not controlled by the ignition switch for a supply
