  • water in exhaust

I am starting to get discouraged. I have been trying to fix up an 88 carbed Festiva because the interior and extrior is in great shape. I put in an engine from a 93 fuel injected model which was running good prior to removing ( of course put on the carb and manual fuel pump, and 88 distributor from the old engine that was in the 88) after installing the motor out of the other car. The 88 ran but water started coming out of the tailpipe. So I was told that the engine head was different of the 93 and would not work on a 88 model. I have since bought 3 - 88 heads and all three were bad so I still have not installed a different head as of yet. I still have the head on the 93 which is in prime condition. My question is: Does anyone know for sure that the 93 head can be made to work on the 88 carbed model and if I may have a problem somewhere in the block or waterline seals or passages within or outside of the engine which is causing the water in the exhaust. I do not believe that water is going into the engine, but can't say for certain. If someone could help me with this problem I would be very grateful. I am so close but so far away to getting this car on the road again.

Billowing clouds of white smoke with water. And when I run it without water in the radiator there is no white smoke. Any Ideas?

Whats the oil look like? Any milkiness to it? Might have a blown head gasket.

The '93 has an IAC (Idle Air Control) valve located below the intak manifold a cylinder no. 4. If it is still connected and malfunctioning ...it can dump water into the engine.

Also do you have a crack intake manifold? or possibly poorly mounted...or bad gasket. Normaly there is water in the intake manifold...maybe it's finding it's way into the intake

Sounds like the head gasket to me also.

I have already replaced the head gasket so I do not think that is the problem. I think maybe it is the intake manifold or the IAC valve. I should try to replace it. I think that I will try to mount the 93 head again. Hope that it is compatibly with the 88 setup. Thanks for the suggestions.

so far as i know, the IAC has no water passages through it to allow coolent into the intake.

that being said, the intake is carbed (a.k.a. no IAC). i'm betting there's a missing gasket somewhere in the mix here.

88-93 heads are all the same save for an EGR passage for the carbed models which won't affect drivability in any way whatsoever.

Thanks for the information on the heads being the same, I'm getting tired of buying heads only to find out that they are no good. This has been a headache for over a year now. I will inspect the intake and replace the gaskets. Thanks!

Might want to double check....the coolant drives a wax motor as the engine warms...this over rides the electrical motor.

it doesn't over ride it; it modifies the oriface that feeds the solenoid.
