  • New cam and crank seals seem too large to replace old ones!

Okay, I feel stupid for having so many questions. This is what happens when a newbie who thinks he can become a mechanic is beginning another big project. ops:

I got new camshaft and crankshaft seals from A-Zone. I just put them up against the old ones in my B6 and they seem a bit too large! It doesn't look like I'll be able to fit them in, even with oil on them. :?:

I replaced the left CV transaxle seal on my '89L once and did that okay. I don't recall the seal looking "too large" to fit, but then it was on the underside kinda in the dark. I just did it.

Do new rotating seals always seem a bit too big to fit, or do you think I could have gotten two different seals that were wrong? I double checked the crank seal set and it says the correct engine! (The cam seals came in plastic bags and the guy wrote "camshaft" on them.)

What do I do? I wanna start my swap tomorrow!

I called A-zone and talked with someone who said the new seals shouldn't look that much bigger than the originals.

I'm now working to remove the crank seal. I got the cam seal out but it was difficult! I'll take both old ones in to see if we can match them with something.

    Maybe I'll try Advance?

This stuff's hard and I haven't even started my swap!

Anyone ever run into seal problems like this?

I replaced the axle seal in my Escort a few weeks ago. The first one they gave me was way too big. The second was even bigger. The third one they brought up was the correct one. For some reason, the computer brought up 3 different part numbers for the same seal. Two of them were very wrong.

        Hey, I solved the problem.

I have a '94 engine, not a '93! Apparently, Mazda changed seal sizes during those years. I got both seals out of the engine and took them in to the store (both the same size). We then figured it out.

I installed both seals this afternoon.

Damn wasted time! That's what happens, folks.
