rough idle and die

i drove my festy from iowa to wyoming and its acting weird. it idles rough and sometimes when i put it into drive it just dies. its kinda "chugging" at idle, but at speed its smooth running.....
i think its lacking some power as well. I personally think fuel filter, but who knows...
any suggestions??

Could be Fuel Filter

Would not hurt to check inside the dist cap for water or crud.
Also, check all of the spark plug wires for firm connection; especially, the high tension wire at the ignotion coil.

yep you do not know how many times my distibuter cap got damp in the inside and made it run rough. i even car a spare in the car just in cade. two times the coill wire got corosion in the cap terminal.
