  • New head.. fan wont start

Though its a wonderful sight to see my car turn on from a very long time, still have a few issues.

Running a B6 head now car turns on but like in 3-6 minutes car overheats and the radiator fan wont kick in.

    Things i done.

    -new water pump
    -new mazda thermostat
-new thermostat switch? -temperature switch- (since festiva one was to big had to replace it)
-fan relay works (ran direct power on the fan and it turns on)
    -Burped the engine as well

No water leaks, engine oil is perfect brown, and water doesn't mysteriously disappear. Used search button but get lots of random stuff :sad10: Any help would be great.

If you disconnect the wire rom the fan temp switch the fan should come on. If it does not...you have a temp switch...wiring....relay...or fan problem.

The temp swicth closes the circuit to ground which enedgizes the fan relay. When the fan relay is energized the fan is off.

I would get the B3 and the B6 head gaskets side-by-side and look for the difference in water jacket locations. You might find your problem.

I agree with jglutz, first thing to do is to check the fuse is OK for the fan circuit and then check for 12v + on the fan relay, (the Festiva fan relay on my NZ assembled Festiva is behind the right hand headlight looking from the front).

It is possible the fan relay is faulty but you can check it if you take the wire off the thermostat (a single wire) and touch a ground point the relay should be heard to click in, sometimes the relays are faulty and you could try a second hand one from a wrecker that works.

What you should do in the meantime is hard wire the fan to remain on continuously if you want to use the vehicle, if you do that as a temporary fix make sure you put a fuse in the circuit (15 amp should be OK)

I check the Fel-Pro part numbers and they are different. The pics they have for the gaskets look the same. If they where the same gaskets, the part numbers should interchange.

yes slapped a B6 85-89? head on a B3 bottom end. Believe we used a kabuki gasket 323 90+ most of the gaskets we couln't use because 323 87-89 was a bit different?

As for the fuse, that was the first thing we checked, it was in perfect condition.
Meantime i will take jglutz & sanjeet advice tommorow and see where i land. Thanks for the info guys will keep you posted.

the 90+ 323's have a 16 valve head, your gasket may not be correct. I would use the one from the 80's car.

                  Wont work

The water jackets dont line up that is why the fan wont come on and your over heating the head is not getting any water i did the b6 swap and my b6 head was cracked so i put the b3 head back on and had the same problem you have now so i drilled the head to match the jackets up and other then a new head gasket every three months ( due to got to close with the drill to the fire ring oops) all went smooth till i finally found a new b6 head which now i have three complete

                    Thats not true. I have a 91 323 8v b6 in my car. I know the mx3 had the 16v.
FFW-You need the gasket for the early 323 as the head for the later ones is different and will not work on your b3. You have the right head just the wrong gasket.

ok so i did what jglutz suggested, fan turned on as soon i turn my key on. Though even with the fan constantly on, car just overheated i just saw that thermostat slowly almost reaching the "H"

Went to O'Reilys and have em pulled Mazda 88 323 SOHC 8v head gasket and a 90 323 (protege) SOHC 8v head gasket and they pretty much almost identical. Might have to do what Shadetree & Hotrodcat mention about comparing B3 on B6. So i will have to drill holes on B6 head gasket to match B3 bottom holes?

go back to parts and compare 323 with b3 and you will see the jackets are better then half a hole off drilling the gasket still wont do it i tried that to your by far better off to go back to b3 head or b6 bottom this probly will never work
