  • AUTOMATIC TRANS SHIFTING

My transmission is shifting hard from 1st to 2nd gear ( automatic)
going down the road around 40 or so it keeps shifting up and down. any clues whats going on????? i got the engine problem straightened out i think, really sluggish for a FI engine when you take off, but after that it runs really good, once and awhile it stalls out but i'll live with that. I put a (FS) in it yesterday,,,,,,,,,,,I'm just going to sell her and buy something else.

could we have a little history on your festy?

i take it you do not like your festy, i mean i have a 1990 festiva automatic (injected) and i love it, sure its my beater, and it has a/c to boot.

sure while going uphill about 35-40 mph it hunts for gears and at standing start its a little slow, BUT IT IS AN 3-SPEED AUTOMATIC AND NOT A MANUAL WHICH OF COURSE IS FASTER

and of course my main vehicle (seen below) is a stick with a/c and aspire brake swap AND OF COURSE A HELL-OF-A-LOT FASTER THAN MY AUTO

Well,,,,,,,,,what can i say about it,,,,,,,,,it has 128,000 miles on it,,,, has a real hard shift out of 1st into second gear, then after that, it shifts into 3rd real smooth,,,,,considering it has no kick down on it,,,,i thought maybe it has another adjustment to it,,,,,, still have the problem with the gas consumption, i filled it up yesterday and put approx. 38 miles on it and it used a 1/4 tank of gas, no clue whats going on there,,,, wants to stall out every once in awhile, i jacked the idle up alittle bit, changed the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator and injector o-rings, air flow meter, air filter, new plugs, wires, and cap & rotor button, there is no visible gas leaks anywhere, any ideas would help me out a bunch,,,,i've been on strike at work for over 11 months, so money is very tight,,,,,,,,, i got a 93 Mazda MX3 with a good motor in it,,,but my daughter won't let me pull it out. Any thoughts,,,,,,,,,,fire them at me

        shifting

my 93 gl automatic shifts hard from 1 to 2nd when i press on the gas to accelerate to pass someone. it also jerks sometimes when going slow through a parking lot like it is hunting for the right gear. it has been doing this for about 5 years and had no other problems with the transmission.

I searched for a transmission thread and this is the closest to what I 've got going on. I drive a 91 Festiva GL, stock 3 spd auto. It does shift hard thru all gears but only if I floor it. My problem? is that it feels like it climbs into gear, not a smooth acceleration but almost a step by step rev and shift. Again this is if I floor it from a stop, when it is moving, no problem. I need to know if it is something to fix or just a maintenance problem. Previous owner looks like the played pinball with the car itself. Odometer says 143,000 but the car was purchased with a non functioning speedo cable.

          Any help is appreciated.

First off, Adam, where are you and is your Festiva like a Ford Festiva/Kia Pride or like a Kia Avella/Ford Aspire?

In Australia, "Festivas" are actually "Aspires" from '94 on, I think.

Does your car still have the old three speed auto, or is it a newer version with four speeds?

              More info might help.

FWIW, sometimes when my ATX shifts on my '93GL, it is a bit hard from 1st to 2nd. Probably not uncommon.

                I live in Australia, Sydney.
The car has 3 forward gears (1,2,D) and a reverse.
Its a 96 model so I suppose its actually an "aspire"?
I got this information from the silver panels under the hood
Kia Motors Ford WB Festiva Model DB Jan 96.
                Thanks,
                Adam

                  hard shift 1-2

check your vacuum modulator, the hose plugged in the front if tranny in the rear of kick down solenoid, if you have oil inside the hose...replace modulator.

                      modulator

it is in the front of tranny, near the oil pan in the rear of the kickdown selenoid. you can see it from under the car in the front area of the tranny on engine side. good luck !

I'm having the same problem with my '89 auto. It had oil in the modulator hose as stated above. Rock auto has them. My question is, has anyone here replaced the modulator? How does it attach/come off? I don;t have a manual.
