  • Radiator/Cooling Fan Specs/Question

    Hi ALL,

I am a new 1990 Festiva L (automatic) owner. Yippee!

Anyway, my radiator fan is dead and I am debating if I should get a slim universal (e.g flexilite) vs. stock vs. just replace the motor. I am waiting on my service manual so I don't have the answers just yet. So I was hoping someone could tell me what the watts or amps are (I will convert whichever you give me) for the stock radiator fans and what size the fan is (i.e. 10", 12" etc). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S I did do some searches and I couldn't find any answers to my questions or (I will admit) the answers were so long ago I got tired of scrolling through the various threads.

    Thanks!!!

Is it really dead, it might be the relay. Put 12v directly to the fan and see if it works? Also check all the connection for corrosion - a common festiva problem.

Welcome to the site, and the wonderful world of Festivas!

Someone here will be able to give you the exact specifications. Personally, my feeling is that it really won't matter as long as you get a fan designed to pull and not push if you are mounting it on the motor side of the radiator. The fan on my '93L has been suffering from a bad relay since last November and it runs non-stop (as long as the key is on). I could not get the engine warm this winter so I just unplugged the fan. I have yet to plug it back in and I have been driving in 95*-100* heat the last 2 months. Even in moderate stop-and-go traffic it never gets beyond 1/2 gauge.

Obviously, I'm taking a chance if I ever get stuck in non-moving traffic, but I can always get out & plug it in. The bottom line is that the cooling fan on a Festiva is all but unnecessary and rarely ever runs. I would get whatever cheap fan I could find that would fit the radiator and get the thermostat/installation kit with it. Sooner or later, you will have problems with the factory system and parts are hard to find. This is just my opinion, others will have some good advice. Good Luck and welcome!

I did. You can hear the relay clicking and I hooked up a volt meter and there was 12v going to the fan but the fan doesn't spin.

Not to mention, unfortunately, I live in NYC so there is always stop and go traffic so my fan needs to work. I drove the car from CT with no problem because there was no traffic, but it sat in 20 minutes of traffic and by the time I stopped there was coolant everywhere overflowing out of the coolant reservoir.

I would keep the stock Festiva setup. Put an ad in [wtb] and somebody can fix you right up with a fan motor.

voltmeter reads the volts, what you need to do is unplug that connector near the top drivers side of the radiator, then get 2 wires and put direct 12V power to the fan off of the battery... + to one lead and - to the other....

Did that too. Used plus & minus from the battery & ran it to the fan motor & no spin. If someone could let me know the fan specs that would be great.

Ive got a dead fan also. I disconnected the wires by the radiator in an attempt for it to run non-stop but i didn't. How do i get it running again? I am in the same boat. Living in miami with the summer heat and traffic worries me so much. Please help

if you disconnect the single wire from the coolant temp sensor that is on the front of the thermostat housing, your cooling fan will run constantly with ignition on.... that is assuming the fan is good.

Yep..I am aware of this too. The temp switch/sensor is disconnected and the fan still doesn't run...I am fairly certain the motor is shot on the fan, hence why I was looking for the specs.

Nonetheless, I am guessing no one knows the stock fan specs...oh well it was worth a try to see if I could find out.

However, I did measure the fan & it seems the stock fan is 12", so I just went ahead and ordered an aftermarket procam fan for $30. Thanks for your help everyone.

If you can't get a fan to work they'd probably rather be a groupie anyway, no?(always check shoe size against IQ...if similar there may be problems; even if Euro-sizes)

Did someone excise my post script:

Maybe I'd written this in another post elsewhere the same day at FF.com and/or managed to "click" when I should've clacked?(likely an editing error on my part)
