  • Newbie needs help re: headlights

Hey what's up? I'm a newbie here. Actually, I've been lurking around for a little while. I write to you today because I have a concern regarding the headlights on my '89 Festiva L.

I did a search on "headlights" in this forum, and honestly I'm not sure if the answer I need is in any of those posts because I'm a dummy when it comes to cars and I don't understand all of the terms used. I don't have the owner's manual or the Haynes Repair Manual, but I plan to order a used one from Amazon today (it was the cheapest I could find.)

My problem is the headlight on the passenger side is out (high beam as well.) I thought it just needed to be replaced, so I bought and replaced both lights, but the same one still isn't working. I first noticed the light was out on a night when I was having problems starting the car. To make a long story short, I was trying to replace the dome light, but it didn't work, and the next thing I knew, I couldn't get the car to start (it would turn but wouldn't catch.) Turns out the distributor needed to be replaced, which I just recently had done, but the headlight is still out.

Is it possible that trying to replace the dome light may have caused a fuse to blow out? The taillights seem to be working fine. Are any of the fuses below the steering wheel for the headlights? I did not see a slot that indicated as such. Should I be looking elsewhere? Thank you in advance for the help!

the fuse for your lights would control both not just one. You may have a broken wire running to that headlight, try tracing the wires. There is also a relay that controls the lights.

Thanks GForce. I went to Pep Boys yesterday and had someone take a look at it (actually it was the same guy that helped me last time, when I couldn't get my car to start.) I guess the light wasn't connected properly because he pushed it in and it worked. I'm glad that it wasn't serious, and that he didn't charge me. But I feel kinda stupid because I thought I connected the bulb properly. Oh well....both headlights work now and that's all that matters. Thanks again for the help!

Don't feel too badly... you're not the first one to have that happen! LOL!
