  • Boo, misfires on Aspire

I've been getting misfires on my aspire. Both serious ones, that shoot P0300 and less serious ones that give me P0304 and occasionally I get... P0170 I think, fuel trim malfunction bank one...

I've had the distro cap and rotor replaced as well as the plugs and plug wires, what else could be causing this BS? It only misfires when I accelerate through 70, especially when I'm around 75.

    misfire

check fuel pressure at 70 mph...then check your compression...you need over 175 psi on each cylinder...furl pressure...i don't remember but not dropping with speed

    good luck

i'm not quite awesome enough to know hwo to do any of that but i'll have a look at my repair manual. for starters i s'pose i should probably replace the fuel filter as it is original. i bet that would help a lot.

actually, it sounds like the distributor.

the late aspires and probes were infamous for exactly what you're describing.

the integral coil is breaking down and leaking voltage to the distributor housing.

I don't know if there are replacement coils available currently. While these vehicles were relatively new, only entire distributors were avaible, around $400 for aspires and $1000 for the probes.

unless he's a seasoned tech or a Ford/Mazda specialist, he probably would never know. You can't tell just by looking at them. You need to do a coil stress test while watching the parade pattern on a scope. Unfortunately, most "techs" these days have no fucking clue what that means. Bunch of fucking parts hangers. Sorry, had a little too much to drink tonight.
