  • Very odd no start problem

    Hi all,

On Sunday a lady and her daughter came out to test drive my 89 Festiva L, EFI. It started right up and ran excellent around the block a couple of times. She parks it in my yard like it was parked before the test drive. They said they'd call me back. At any rate, Monday around 6pm, I get in to take it somewhere to take pictures of it. It keeps cranking and cranking but no start. So I removed the coil wire and put it close to ground and crank, it gets a consistent spark. Of course, I can't find my spark tester to really see how strong the spark is. I will prolly buy a new one today to check it again.

I check the inertia switch to see if it popped, but it is good. So now, I am gonna check the fuel system. Haven't had time to really check it out and its been incredibly hot. What do you think I should check first? Do I remove the line from the fuel filter and put it in a bottle and crank to see if any fuel is coming out? The fuel filter looks really old and I have a spare new one in the trunk. Do you think this could be the cause of the no start?

Does anybody have any other ideas of where to go from here? I think it is a simple problem. The car has 186k miles on it and I replaced the timing belt and tensioner back in March. Plugs, cap, rotor, and wires have been replaced in March too, along with disty O ring. This car has started instantly since I've owned it so this is the first time its ever not started.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

not trying to be funny but check to see if there is gas in it because gauge could be faulty like my brothers was and my pickup truck still is.

I was thinking that but it is showing 1/4 tank. I guess it wouldn't hurt to put a couple gallons in.

Weird, today, I just sprayed some carb cleaner into the throttle body and cranked it up. It ran for about two to three seconds and died. So, I sprayed a little more in, and kept cranking it, and it started running and idling. So I gently hit the gas pedal and it stayed running like the champ it is. Now I can start her up all the time, albeit, I'm a little bit scared to drive it too far. Does anybody have any idea what it was? Could it be a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter? I'll replace the fuel filter just for peace of mind anyways.

I would suspect the fuel filter. If you replace the fuel filter, you need to check the fuel hose that enters from the bottom of the filter, to make sure it is in good shape. I had my filter done at certified auto repair garage. 3 days later, that hose split open soaking the engine compartment with gasoline. I was so Pissed!!!
