  • Suggestions for passing emissions tests

Get the car properly tuned up--plugs, wires, cap & rotor, air filter
Change the oil and filter; clean out the motor with Sea Foam before doing so
Retard the ignition timing a little
Stick a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass" in the gas tank
    Install a new oxygen sensor

Install a good aftermarket 45,000 volt coil (I recommend the Jegs generic coil, part #555-40105, with mounting bracket #555-40190) and gap the plugs 10% greater than stock. Index the plugs so that the gap is facing more or less at the intake valve. I get 7-10% better MPG from doing this, so it probably also translates into cleaner burning. It would be interesting to test this.

Readers please add on other ideas.

Run Sea Foam through the intake. It works EVERYTIME. Really.

Does this work better as opposed to advancing it? I've always run my cars with the timing advanced and never had a problem passing emissions.

Angoras are better. The long fur traps more pollutants.

                Haven't tried angoras yet.
As far as ignition timing goes, I'm just passing on what I've heard from the Subaru board I am a member on. This may apply to cars with bigger issues than a basically healthy engine.

advancing CAN cause your NOx to go up, but in most cases, there's still room to go even after you add 10* advance before you run into that issue. advancing your timing usually leads to better economy as well, though i do suggest running a higher grade fuel at the same time.

93 octane in mine. With the kind of mileage Festivas get, I can afford to use premium.

You betcha. I plan to do an MPG run the weekend after next with advanced ignition.
