Input shaft play

How much play is a 5 speed input shaft supposed to have, just bought a used one and seems to have quite a bit please what is normal

I bought bushing's that go in in the shifter for mine, didn't seem to last that long...

Is it true that the 5 speed has only one bearing on the main shaft inside the case ,and the pilot bearing is the support for the end of the shaft in the flywheel to keep it centered

no, not on most transaxles. That's usually only true for rwd transmissions (T5OD, M5ODR1/2). The input shaft in a transaxle is captured by two tapered roller bearings inside the case. The pilot bearing, if used, is primarily for alignment. When you say the shaft has play, in what direction do you mean? does the shaft flop around (up/down, left/right)? does it plunge in and out (endplay)? or when you turn it, is there slack before the gears engage (gear lash)?

Wow thanks for the reply I was wondering if anybody out there was listening, the shaft only has play up and down not really any side to side and does not have any in and out play and there is no slop when you turn the shaft thanks again , Doug

sounds like the input shaft bearings are wiped. That shaft shouldn't have any play off of centerline.

Ok thanks alot I am going to take a chance and throw it in and see if it is better than what I have now I will keep my fingers crossed and let you know the results.I am putting in a new clutch set also , Thanks again .Doug

yeah its junk worse than mine, my input shaft is tight no play so the noise ? only in 1,2,3, not 4,5 so I am putting a master kit in the tranny and taking the junkyark junk back WOW cost more than I paid for the car LOL , but the festy is worth it , thanks alot again and I will have more questions about a drivability problem when we are on the road again Doug

you have noise in you current trans? and it occurs only ine 1, 2, and 3? Describe the noise, and I might be able to help.

First it was a clicking then it turned into a constant whining when you put a load on it either accel or decel and then you could hear the squeal and squal of a bearing ? and then it began to knock and you could feel in the shifter and it was real loud but only in 1-3 quiet in 4,5 this was my current trans , the one I bought was the one with all the play and decided not to install it and had a master kit put in mine, he said the main input bearing was gone , is that what you were thinking or did I get the shaft with my shaft I also had the flywheel resurfaced and a new clutch put in I would nave done it myself but no time workin 80 hours a week LOL , thanks Doug

nope, that sounds about right. The only other thing I'd be concerned with is whether or not that did any damage to the gear teeth. Did the bearing send any debris into the oil (chunks of roller/cage/race), or did it just grind itself to powder? If you had chunks, they could have nicked the teeth, causing a whirring and /or knocking noise, but only in those specific gears. I say put your rebuilt one in a go for a ride. If there's minor gear noise, and you live with it, then don't worry about it. Won't really affect the durability of the trans.

No damage to the teeth or the syncros just the bearings put a bk200 bearing kit in it ,all the bearings I am really happy it is the quietist it has ever been , I have had the car for 2 years , I also found out that the trans that had all the play had 200,000 miles on it but that really is not alot for a festy, mine has 141,000 and is matted all the time LOL
