  • Help shifting without linkage

My shift linkage abandoned me. I'm trying to get it into 3rd to limp it back home so I can fix it. I can't seem to get it out of neutral though... :S

oooooooooooooo not good.. check the linkage and components first... a bolt may have fallen out somewhere... (thats happened to me). check on the transmission side as well as the shifter side.

here is what i'd do if you don't have a shift linkage: have someone push in the clutch, then go under the car to the transmission and pull the lever straight out, that'd be third. Then you can leave it in gear all the way home. big thing would be i don't know how hard it is to pull that lever out by hand... may need to pry it or something.

I'm just on the other side of the hump from Port Alberni. I should be able to get a ride into town. It's just a matter of whether I can get my car there and not have to leave it or tow it. I'm taking the shift linkage off altogether now.

Well I took the shift linkage off and now figure it to be a problem with the tranny. I do have two spares at home though. The fact that it felt sloppy and the bottom seal is broken made me think it to be the linkage, but it feels fine on it's own.

Well crap! Why couldnt it just be something simple fixable from the outside.

Thanks a lot for your offer though Ken. I've got my next door neighbour coming to get me (he's got a towing company). How long ya figure it'll take to throw another tranny in?

No worries buddy! Anytime!!! That's great your next door neighbor is coming to help. Im not sure in one of these, haven't done one yet, but don't figure it would be too horrible of a job really. Do you have a place to do it in, or anything?

It should take 2-4 hours depending on tools avail.
