Oil off engine block--Simple Green, elbow grease, more Simple Green, repeat as necessary.

White smoke--either a valve problem (burning oil), or coolant in the combustion chamber due to a bad head gasket.

By oil sludge I guess you mean inside the engine? If so, you can flush it out with Marvel Mystery Oil. Drain the oil, add one quart of MMO, finish filling with oil, run the motor for about ten minutes, drain again and refill with oil, and change filter.

White smoke can be worn rings but I think less likely than the head gasket.

I thought white smoke meant a bad valve, and black smoke worn rings?

            White Smoke = Coolant
            Blue Smoke = Oil
Black smoke = fuel or lots of oil.

OK, but I thought you could tell the difference by the color of the smoke whether it was bad valves or bad rings.

The smell of antifreeze in the white smoke is a giveaway too.
Oil smoke doesnt smell the same.

my nephew had a festiva a long time ago he blew the head gasket on it.
take the radiator cap OFF and watch it while its running.... does the water gush out like its being intermittently pressurized?

My nephews would gush out like a volcano every time that breeched cylinder went up..
it was really kinda funny to watch.

the dimwit sold that spotless little car for 100 bucks, I wanted to kill him.
