Anyone -
I've got a 1988 Festiva L that for some reason almost always runs GREAT but every now and then the engine boggs down/starts to die when you rev the engine up above idle. To clarify: it runs fine in idle but when you step on the gas pedal to get ready to release the clutch, it starts to die. (yes, even with the clutch fully engaged) At the desired higher RPMs, unless you constantly goose/rev the gas pedal it will bog down and die. If it dies you can immediately start it up and it will run just fine in idle. Try to rev the engine above idle and it starts to die again. My guess would be that for some reason the fuel flow requirements above idle (stepping on the gas) cannot be met, as in, something must be restricting the fuel flow when above idle??? The car sat for almost a year while I was overseas but that ended about 9-12 months ago. When I worked on getting it running again the problem then was it would die in idle. The following repairs solved the idle problem:
- 88 Festiva L
- 167,300 miles
- no engine mods
- overhauled/rebuilt carberator
- new spark plugs
- new spark plug wires
- new distributor cap
- new fuel filter
- new air filter
- tightening a loose wire inside the distribtor (after the engine was warm the wire would start to arc and cause the engine to run rough/die in idle)
Even after 4 or so tanks of gas, could it just be water in the tank?
BTW, the fix seems to be to just let it sit. Several hours later or the next day it runs just fine. It started acting up today at 11:15 AM and when I ran it tonight at 7PM it did the same thing. However, I ran it just now at 9:40PM and it runs JUST FINE.
ANY IDEAS???????
