  • Oil leak on 91 festy

    I have a 91 festy and I just cleaned the motor today to find an oil leak. Well it appears to coming from the bottom, Oil pan or maybe crank seal. So i took of the two bolts that hold on the timing cover on top and looked and felt the timing belt and there was no signs of oil. I was told and read that if the crank seal was leaking then there would be oil residue in and on the timing belt and cover is this true. If this is true can anyone give me some insight on how hard it is to replace the oil pan gasket. Also how the heel do you take of the rear drums to adjust the e brake. There is no access to get to the little adjuster thingy on the back plate. Any help would be great for both these issues. Thanks

      Could you take pictures of where you think the ooil is coming from. I made a thread exactly like this a few weekas ago and provided pictures. It turned out to be the valve gasket and now theres no leak. Pictures will help us help you.

        Actually, adjusting the e-brake is done at the lever between the seats. Do you have the Haynes manual? If not,
        1. pull off the e-brake cover (3 screws and a little plastic piece that snaps off to let the brake lever clear);
        2. inside is a long hexagonal piece which is the adjuster; remove the little clip that holds it in place;
        3. adjust the lever to about 8-12 clicks; put clip back to hold it; reinstall e-brake cover.

        Now, if you're talking about adjusting the rear brakes themselves, normally it wouldn't be needed; they should self-adjust. With the wheel off the ground, does it spin freely or is there binding from either the brakes not releasing completely, or the bearings being too tight? Loosen the bearings by turning the nut; if that makes the wheel move better, then the bearings were too tight. If not, take the nut off. The drum "should" come right off--you might have to wiggle it. When you get in there, you might find either a sticking wheel cylinder or a rusted-up e-brake mechanism, which you can free up with PB Blaster, then lube with grease so it won't happen again.

        Since you're in there, this would be a good time to repack or replace the bearings and do the brakes, if needed.

          On the brake issue, I have adjusted the e brake at the handle but i was wanting to know how to take of the drum. It looks like by reading other post you have to take the spindle nut off to take the drum off, no big deal but I cant seem to get the spindle nut cap off. If anyone can give me some insight on how to do this that would be great.

            Do you mean the grease cap on the outside? If so, just stick a flat-bladed screwdriver in where it connects to the drum; tap it with a hammer, ratchet, rock or whatever's handy; twist the screwdriver to get it started out; work your way around the cover.

              Thanks tominMo Ill try that again but I just wasn't making no headway with that process. I was afraid I was going to mess up the cap.

                On the oil leak situation i'm not to sure if it is the valve cove gasket, and why do I say that, well I cleaned the hell out of the engine today with Gunk engine clean and when I was finished I drove her around for a little while and no leaks up top, but I did notice that I was leaking down by the crank pulley/ oil pan gasket area. So that when I remover the two bolts up top for the timing cover and noticed NO oil residue of anykind in the cover or on the belt which leaves me to believe the crank seal is OK. Now unless the info I received from other people is wrong, I was told the belt and cover would have oil on them and oil slung around the cover because the timing belt goes all the way down to the crank. I HOPE that all it is, is the oil pan gasket!!!!

                            here is what it looks like after a 60 mile drive. Now I cleaned the whole underneathe and this is the result.

                              When my cam seal leaked the belt and cover were dry but you could see oil running down from the seal toward the crank.
