  • Need help in Missouri with repairs

:help::help::help::help::help:I live in jeff county missouri and was wondering if there is anyone around that area that knows alot about festys that could help me do some of the work need to my daughters car. It needs I think at least either the oil pan gasket or crank seal replaced, but I just figured if Im going to go that far I would do all the seals and the water pump and timing belt. Ill get the parts some drink and snacks and we can go to town. So if there is anyone out there in Ford Festiva World that has done this before that could help me and or be willing to help me that would be great and my daughter would be happy her car isnt leaving its mark every where. Just let me know send me a message a we can go from there. Thanks TAYTAYS dad Mark:help:

How about doing an oil change and dumping in a bottle of seal conditioner, for starters. Clean off the motor with Simple Green or Foamy Engine Brite. Then see how the leaks are. But do a valve cover gasket anyway--easy to do, you don't need help with that (perhaps with a little advice from here, IDK your level of mechanical ability).

Definitely get the Haynes manual if you don't have it. Should be readily available at one of the McParts stores around you.

Edit: just noticed you had the thread "Oil leak on 91 Festy", so much of this advice is old news to you.

Does that seal condition really work? I did clean the motor this weekend and the leaks are around the crank/ oil pan area. I plan on replacing the v/c gasket.

Yes, it can greatly reduce the amount of leaking if the reason for leaking is simply old, dry seals (you did say it sat for four years). If the seal is worn rather than dried out, it will not help all that much; but I'm betting it will help you since the car sat for so long.

Questions concerning the oil pan gasket for more experienced members:
Is this gasket sealed on with silicon, such that it should be left alone if original? Or should he go for it on general principles?
Also, is it simply a matter of undoing the oil pan bolts (I'm guessing around 18 of 'em), and then dropping the pan, or is it more complicated than that?

I'm looking at a 15.5 ounce bottle of Bar's Leaks "Engine Oil Stop Leak". It's honey-colored. I buy it for every used car I buy and put it in with the first oil change, on general principles, and then annually after that (when I remember). Any auto parts store carries it.

You know Tominmo i have seen that before but was hessitaint to get it, but if you say it could work its definalty worth a try, and since we have a self oil changing car after a day or so i should be able to add it without changing the oil again. NOTE: I changed the oil this weekend.

Self-oil-changing! :-) I like it! Sez on the bottle it takes about 250 miles to fully work. (You might need two bottles! If so, add the second one 125 miles after the first.)

I usta have an old Datsun pickup that used a quart of oil every 200 miles; but it was leaking out the valves or maybe the oil-control rings, so stop leak didn't help that vehicle. But it has worked well on several others I have had. The Datsun ran great tho. Made two DC to St. Louis trips with it, stopping every 200 miles to add the oil. It was an old super-rusty beater truck and not worth the expense of repairing this problem.

OK Ill give it a try. Now I had a toyota one time and the previous owner used bars stop leak for the radiator and it clogged up the radiator and the heater core. Now I know this is different but have you seen any negitive affects for using this?

Nope. The radiator stuff is a whole different issue; smaller passages. The stuff for the oil is not gonna do that.
