  • Spark Plug Problem!

I need help guys! When doing a tune up on my car I noticed that the plug on the #1 cylinder was different. Well I put the socket on there and I got nothing. Plug is completely rounded out. So far I have tried pounding a smaller socket on and JB welding it. Neither have worked. I have also used about a 1/2 can of PB blaster. Any other ideas before I pull the head. Having my bro machine a sharper socket but in the meantime anyone else have any ideas? If I do end up taking off the head should I just buy a reman on Ebay or just have it machined? Thanks for any ideas!

You can use the Snap-On twist deep sockets.

Just a guess, but I would say the reason the plug is rounded off and different than the others is because it is stuck in the head. I doubt any fancy tool will remove it, but I hope I'm wrong. I had the exact same problem with mine when I first bought it (and it only had about 34K miles). Depending on the miles and your financial status, I would pull the head and take it to a machine shop to have the plug extracted. Also, have them grind/check the valves if it has a lot of miles. Regardless, have the head resurfaced if you want a trouble free re-installation. Install a new timing belt (since it will have to come off anyway).

Option #2 is drive it until the old plug finally dies.

I did #2 until I was forced to do #1. (Figuratively speaking)

      Good luck!

Have you tried to remove the plug when the engine is hot? Or heat it with a torch not too hot but as hot as you dare. Maybe that would help.

don't heat the plug, that will cause it to swell and bind in the bore. Heat the head around the plug with a propane torch (doesn't get hot enough to damage the head), and cool the plug with compressed air. Immediately try to remove the plug. Two people are best for this. By the way, this was a TSB in 1988.

I had a similar problem on my old B3. After many unsuccesful attempts with different sockets, heat, etc I tried generous doses of "Release-All" (similar to P-B- Blaster I assume) over several days. Use a six point socket and the plug came out really smoothly.
