  • New speedo cable problem

Ok, so the reason my last tach cluster got stuck was the old speedo cable end was crushed a little. So, when installing my new cluster, I went ahead and replaced the cable. Three problems:

I removed the cable, but they had to order a new one. In the mean time, I had the end with the gear plugged in with some tape over the end so water couldn't get in (or so I thought). Today, I pulled the end out, and it had fluid almost all the way to the top! I'm guessing that water got in, but I'm not sure if maybe from sitting for a couple weeks all the fluid settled in it and made it look fuller than before. Should the post that goes into the tranny be wet almost all the way up?

Also, I used the lube that came with the new cable. I pulled the whole cable out of the sleeve and lubed it up. The instructions in the box says to NOT lube the ends, but on here it says to. I went ahead and lubed them anyway, but now until about 40mph the speedo jumps about 5mph back and forth.

The tach reads between 1100-1500rpm at idle. Before it idled at 800-1000.

Thanks for any information on these things.

If you had water in the tranny it would settle to the bottom.
Crack the tranny drain bolt, assuming 4/5spd and let some fluid drip out.
You should be able to discern if it is trans fluid or water.
If trans fluid drain to the appropriate level and your good to go.
If water drain it all out and refill with clean fluid.
You might want to do this a few times to flush it out good.

My new speedo cable sometimes jumps back and forth, about 1-2 MPH, up until I hit 35 MPH, then it settles down. Oddly enough it doesn't do it all the time.

I've lubed it twice, but avoided lubing the ends. For now I just live with it.
