really starting to bug me

I don't know if this is still a fuel problem from my tank or not, I replaced my filter with a clear one and it doesn't look that bad now so i don't know. Sometimes my car will run great for a long time, then start crapping out all of a sudden, other times it wont start, sometimes it will bog and i can shut it off and restart it and its fine..Ive checked my timing(obviously it wasn't bad it was running)I did change my manifold and down pipe and didn't change my o2 sensor, so i plan on changing that today and trying it..but when it "bogs" i can be driving along at about 80km/h, then push the gas the slightest bit and it will sound like its going to die..then i can get off the gas and it will pick back up. I'm assuming that's a fuel problem, but when it wont start...Ill get in and turn it over and it'll just crank over and i can start to smell fuel, so that's why I'm not sure if it is a fuel problem anymore..To get it to even fire i have to shut the ignition off, hold the gas to the floor, and crank it over, even then it will fire and that's it. This happened last night at my girlfriends house, and i was getting pretty mad so i waited about an hour, went back out and it fired right up

Yesterday i changed my o2 sensor, my dad played with it a bit, adjusted my idle, checked timing again, checked all the plug wires, and after yesterday were thinking its an ignition problem, now it'll run fine (when it runs)..ill accelerate, it'll pick up to a certain point, then die off, then come back in a few hundred rpm's later, its not always at the same rpm when it does this.

Did you check the fuel pump?

If it's an early Festiva, maybe your carb has dirt in it or needs cleaning.

Could very well be my fuel pump i guess, it HAS pumped its fair share of junk mixed in with gas...but you think that it would pump sometimes and not others?Plus when it cranks over and doesn't start i can smell the gas, so my dad thinks its either ignition or enough of the sh** from the tank got into the injectors and clogged em up..

Sounds like the fuel pump is OK. Still worth checking it, though.

The next step might be to remove, inspect, and clean the injectors.

just because you smell gas doesn't mean you have the correct pressure at the injectors. 5-10 psi will dribble fuel out, but not enough to start the engine (way too lean). And since it hasn't started and used the fuel, you'll smell it. Check both the pump pressure (static and dynamic) and injector flow.

I just had the similar problem starts but would not rev up , it would rev like it was hitting a rev limiter when you were on the gas , sometimes it would bog like you shut the key off, then pick itself back up, but it would idle it must have had enough fuel to idle , but not enough to rev it it was the pump !, I just replaced it 8/31/05 and again 11/14/05 I thought it would have lasted longer than that $100.00 pump

It was the pump !, I just replaced it 8/31/05 and again 11/14/05 yesterday ,and I also ran some heet thru it just incase it had some moisture in the line
