  • Help !!!

I have a 92 Festiva 5 speed. Sat. morning, was attempting to start it and foot slipped off clutch and all acc. lights on dash went off and car lost all power whatsoever. It did this once before about 6 months ago and I kept putting ignitation key in and out and pushing clutch in and out for about 30 minutes and finally lights came back on and car started. What is wrong...cant get it back running now...HELP.

this is the wrong section for posting this problem, but for the 1st post we won't get too mad. A mod may move it to the repair section.

you say that you kept putting the key in the ignition - is the key going in fully and rotating in the cylinder properly? Also "pushing in the clutch in and out for 30 minutes" seems odd...

check your fusible links- they are behind the battery, in front of the strut tower.
may be your ignition tumbler assy too.

Sounds to me like the safety switch is getting a bit iffy. Sounds like it was trying to engage the starter, and when your foot slipped off, the starter was already pulling current, and sort of overloaded the car's system. The 30 minutes is probably just how long everything needed to cool back down.

I'd second the notion of checking the links, or replacing them like this. Very likely, the center one is fried.

        Quite right ejp2fast!

I'm leaning toward the safety switch on the clutch pedal.
Follow the clutch pedal up into the dash area you should see a plunger type switch that is depressed when you press the clutch in.
You need to see that it is engaging when the clutch is pressed.
Other wise there should be adjustments for position of the switch left, right, up, down, and back and forth to properly engage the switch when depressing the clutch.
Anyone have or can get pics for him?
