when replacing the rear main seal, do you need to take out the seal retainer or can you just pull the old seal out and punch the new one back in? Thanks in advance.

91 Festiva, 5spd, B8 swapped, now for paint and suspension -
I have done it both ways, but I over torqued the retainer, and had to find a new one, very unpleasant.
I say use a seal remover, and carefully tap in a new one. A block of SOFT wood does well for this to start....Contact me for information about Festiva Madness!
