Well. I think what has happened is your tank has rusted. the same thing was happening to mine. so what i did was cut it all off and welded on new metal. but since yours is all the way through I would just get a new tank. unless you feel comfortable welding on your tank.

fuzzstiva, details of the car are useful when your request assistance.
Not tominMO covered both bases via a carbi and EFI fuel tank.
Note too specific Aspires tanks can be used as well.

Depending upon finances I'd replace it with new.
Otherwise, I'd mark the area of leakage.
        Drain the tank.
disconnect the fuel lines from inside the car behind the access panel.
        block the fuel pump outlet.
And heres the critical part pull a slight vacuum via the fuel return line.
You pull too much vacuum and you will collapse the fuel tank!
Mix-up a two part epoxy with a 5-10 min cure time thin it with acetone so when you apply it to the seam the vacuum will pull the reduced viscosity epoxy into the perforation.
Hold the vacuum till the cure time is complete.
Let sit over night, a warm garage would be better.
Refit everything and refill with gas and check to see if your leak has stopped.

My tank leaks, and the replacement one I got does too, but I found that it was only two pinholes near the seam. I sanded all the rust off, and I will re-undercoat it. There is not visible rust inside, but I might re-coat the inside too.

To stop the leaks, I used some stuff they sell At Murray's. I was looking for the Permatex stuff, but they didn't have it, so I bought the same thing but from a different brand. It is supposedly a permanent fix, but I don't know since I just patched it a couple days ago and the tank is still nearly empty. It didn't leak though when I tested it after putting the patch stuff on.

Sorry bout the mix up. yes its for a EFI. the leak is coming from the seal where the two halfs come together. I am gonna run it dry then try one of the leak fixers. dont have money for new tank right now.

Sure, might as well try cheap and simple first. Don't fill the tank completely the first time; maybe 6 gallons at most. If you know where the leak is coming from, park it so that side is downhill to see if it is still leaking. If that doesn't work, try the leak fixer again. If THAT doesn't work, just don't fill it more than halfway till you get a new tank. But it'll probably work, and probably the first time. Let us know.

Both of my Festivas have little weeps around the tank seam. I've just gotten used to putting in no more than four gallons at a time.
