Timing without sti connector

Does anyone know that if I time the ignition timing with a timing light but I don't have the sti connector or so I think. Can I time it without the sti? What are the effects when grounding the sti? Does it advance the timing a little when the sti is grounded?

Can someone please see on his engine the timing, without grounding the sti connector using a timing light and tell me what the timing is at idle. I know that the correct timing is 10 degrees btdc with the sti grounded but I want to know what will the timing be without grounding the sti connector.

It will stay moving as the computer tries to keep it at the "perfect" spot.

If the computer tries to make it at the perfect spot at idle, why is the distributor adjustable?

For what they call "base" timing. All motors are a little different......altitude, temp, grade of gas, etc.....
