How to remove speedo cable?

How do you remove the speedo cable with out breaking the snap ears on the connector that holds it to the firewall? The connector is the part that the rubber gromment attaches to.

Carefully. :-)

Detach it from the tranny first, then you can pull the whole cluster out (if you haven't already). Then push down on the release part with your thumb. Should come off easily. If not, carefully pry it up with a flat screwdriver.

That IS the tricky part. The ears are very tight fit, as you have noticed. If you can get under the dash well enough, which is a real trick, you *may* get enough leverage to push in the two ears enough to release them, and slip the grommet toward the engine side. They are TENACIOUS! and want to break rather than fit back through the hole. I have seen more broken trying to take them out than saved, so be patient. You may want to pull the seat to give you the room you really need.

Oh... and the thing that makes you angry??? After all the effort to get it loose, it snaps back SOOOO easily that you have to watch it! Next thing you know, you are back at square one.

Can you get to it from under the dash? Or thru the cluster hole? My hand is to big for thru the cluster hole. ha ha

You have to go under the dash. The steering column bracket gets in the road. Like I said, I pull the seat out at a drop of a hat when I have to get under there. It doen't take long to do, and it really helps give you wiggle room you dont have standing on your head.
My hands don't fit real well, and don't work as they used to under there either!
